An Ozone Park coffee company is generating a gourmet caffeine buzz.
Dallis Bros. Coffee founded in Queens in 1913, recently began offering tours and tastings at its brand new showroom.
“It´s an excellent time for coffee in New York”, said Dallis spokesman John Moore. “There´s a change in the coffee consuming culture. It’s getting more and more sophisticated.”
The burgeoning interest in where coffee comes from and the subtle differences in flavor led the coffee roasters to create tours and offer workshops for budding baristas, he said. Previously, the company had sold its specialty beans to restaurants and cafes.
Dallis Bros. is further capitalizing on the craze by launching a high-end brand. Octavio Café and a lower-priced Gramercy Blend in addition to its environmentally friendly staple Dallis Bros. House Blend.
“You may come in here thinking coffee is coffee, and I would challenge you to leave with the same assumption,” Moore said.
The Queens operation, which was purchased by the Brazilian company Octavio about three years ago. Imports beans from about 15 to 20 countries – including Octavio’s Brazilian farm, Moore said. The Ozone Park facility roasts just under 1 million pounds of beans a year, he said.
And the company takes pains to ensure the quality of its brew.
The roasters sent back about 40.000 pounds of Nicaraguan beans last week after tasting a defected that gave the coffee a “terrible” flavor, Moore said.
Coffee buyers run moisture tests on every batch of beans to ensure the utmost freshness, Moore said. And it seems to have paid off.
Gayle Santana, coffee editor of BellaOnline, is a fan of the company’s steamy molten brown java. “It’s a quality coffee.”
Brooklyn restaurateur Jacques Gautier has been buying from Dallis Bros. since he opened his Latin American restaurant Palo Santo four years ago.
“They really have very good quality coffee”, Gautier said. “Dealing with them has been a pleasure”.
